Myrtle was born and brought up in the beautiful Lam valley of Swainswick just north of Bath. Early years were influenced by these surroundings designated as an area of outstanding natural beauty. In the early 80’s she moved to the Somerset levels, three miles from Wells, commuting every day to Bristol to teach.
Trained as a painter, and influenced by the Post impressionists, the Fauves, and 20th. Century British Artists such as Sickert, Ravilious, Coldstream, Ken Howard and others, it became important to work from direct observation and to develop her technical skill. Familiarity with surroundings is a vital ingredient in the majority of her work.
In the early 80’s a desire to increase her technical skills drew her to relief printmaking resulting in a distinction as part of a teacher training course. The tactile task of cutting a block had a great appeal and she went on to complete post graduate course.
Having taught for 20 years in a sixth form college, passing on skills to young enthusiastic students, she now creates her own impressions of her Somerset surroundings.
As well as an active member of Artists303 , Myrtle is a member of The Society of Graphic Fine Art and a member of Bath Society of Artists.
