Kate moved to Somerset early 1990s and now lives in Frome working from her studio in the garden. Inspiration comes from elements of the landscape including reflections, rocks and ruined castles. For a number of years, including time spent in Tasmania, she concentrated on trees enjoying the challenge of capturing the soft green-greys of eucalypts infused with a southern light.
Kate is predominately a colourist though form is essential: colours often saturated are teased out of the subject considering the light plus the play of ground and fore-ground.
More recently Kate has explored her love of story-telling and completed a series of paintings depicting The Skeleton Woman, The Firebird & the Golden Apples and The Crescent Moon Bear'
Images for landscape are from her photos adjusted and manipulated by computer before being used. Kate likes to find connections with the area by walking, or by visiting castles, often reflecting on the past history of a place.
Media used includes oil, acrylic, acrylic inks, gouache, oil pastel or pastel, on board, paper or canvas. The method includes layering of paint by palette knife, developing texture and adding glazes.
