Kate Cochrane

Kate CochraneI moved to Somerset 27 years ago and now consider it home. My studio is in the garden and is where I do most of my painting. My work is based on elements of the landscape from reflections to ruined castles. For a number of years, including time spent in Tasmania, I concentrated on trees; enjoying the challenge of capturing the quiddity of eucalypts and a southern light.

Above all I work in colour - often saturated and teased out of the subject, bringing in light plus the play of ground and fore-ground.

My images are taken from my own photos, often adjusted in the computer before being used as my reference. I like to find a connection with the area I walk through, or the castles I visit, either immediately or when reflecting on their historical pasts.
I use a variety of media including oil, acrylic, gouache and pastel on board or canvas. My method includes layering of paint, developing texture and adding glazes.
